Whether in captivity or in the wilderness, Western Australia features some amazing types of native animals and birds.


Quokka, Rottnest IslandRottnest Island

Rottnest Island is the only place in Western Australia where you'll find a thriving colony of quokkas. Around 10,000 of these gentle, friendly marsupials - which some liken to a mini-kangaroo - call the pristine island home.


Busselton Wetlands

These stunning wetlands are home to 35,000 birds - around 90 species in total! Set along a 25 kilometre strip behind the dunes of Geographe Bay, it also houses an interpretive centre, walk trails, boardwalks and viewing platforms.


Porongurup National Park

Native mammals including kangaroos and brush wallabies can be spotted among rare wildflowers, woodlands, and stands of karri trees in this 2,500 hectare park. The picnic area near Tree in the Rock is a haven for feathered friends, including vividly coloured scarlet and yellow robins and rufous tree creepers.


Hill Forest Discovery Centre

Set in the stunning surrounds of a jarrah forest, this fascinating educational centre is packed with fun, nature-based activities and camping excursions. Expect to see plenty of native birds and fauna on the many walk trails.

Koala, Yanchep National Park
Yanchep National Park

One of Western Australia's oldest national parks is home to a koala colony and countless kangaroos. Just one hour from Perth, it's also rich in Aboriginal history and ancient limestone caves.


Roebuck Bay

Millions of birds flock here from northern Asia during migration, feeding on the mud flats and roosting on the red sand in the Bay. Admire them from afar or visit Broome's Bird Observatory for an educational experience.


Mornington Wilderness Camp

Situated in the heart of the Kimberley, this awe-inspiring sanctuary is home to over 200 species of birds and countless fascinating reptiles. Nature lovers can explore the habitat on a guided tour.


Windjana Gorge

Freshwater crocs of all shapes and sizes abound in this spectacular three and a half kilometre gorge, which stretches 100 metres across and up to 100 metres high.

Penguin, Penguin Island
Penguin Island

This picturesque 12.5 hectare island is home to the largest colony of little penguins on the west coast. Watch them being fed and learn more about these super-cute birds through commentaries and displays.


Derby

Derby is a small town, famous for its history, friendly faces, fishing, massive tides and abundance of saltwater crocs! View them safely from the Derby jetty vantage point.
