November to December
Abalone is a succulent shellfish which breeds in shallow, coastal waters in many temperate oceans around the world. It's particularly plentiful in Western Australian waters, where conditions are perfect for its growth and breeding.
Considered a delicacy by many, the shellfish can only be harvested for an extremely limited period each year. This creates a spectacle along the state's southern coastline as visitors and locals comb the reefs for a few hours each day taking their choice of shellfish, bearing in mind the strictly monitored bag and size limits.
Abalone fishing is very strictly regulated and heavy fines are enforced for people who break the rules. Visit the Fisheries website for up to date information about abalone fishing regulations.
