Perhaps because of its splendid isolation, Western Australia has produced some extraordinary acts that have taken the world by storm.

Western Australian Symphony OrchestraFrom music and models to designers and sculptors, Western Australia is a breeding ground for innovative minds, unique talents and fresh ideas.

Some put this success down to the idyllic surrounds - clean air, wide open spaces and stunning landscapes.

But others link it to Perth's strong independent streak, born from being the most isolated city in the world.

As a result, it has developed its own distinct style and sound.

Musically, Perth has always had a thriving local scene with links to some of the most iconic bands in Australian history - such as INXS and AC/DC.

In fact, AC/DC front man Bon Scott - who grew up in Western Australia - is buried in Fremantle Cemetery.

Perth's booming music scene, known in some circles as "the new Seattle", is largely thanks to the recent success of bands such as Eskimo Joe, Little Birdy, Jebediah, the Sleepy Jackson, End of Fashion and Gyroscope.

Perth has developed a well-deserved reputation for producing some of the most beautiful models in the world - leaving some to ponder what's in the water here!

Perth Fashion FestivalUber-model Gemma Ward was spotted in the crowd at a modelling competition at age 14, and has since starred in campaigns for Hermes, Valentino, Prada, Burberry and Calvin Klein.

Meanwhile, Perth-born Megan Gale is a mega-star on the European modelling circuit.

Acting-wise, Oscar-nominated actor Heath Ledger was born and bred in Perth - as was Hollywood starlets Melissa George and Isla Fisher.

Perth is where you'll find coveted acting school WAAPA (West Australian Academy of Performing Arts), where Hugh Jackman and Dominic Purcell both graduated.

Then there's the fact that some of Australia's leading artists have hailed from Westerrn Australia. The work of Robert Juniper, Ron Gomboc and the late Guy Grey-Smith are part of prestigious collections around the world.

Black Swan Theatre CompanyBest-selling writers from Western Australia include Tim Winton, Elizabeth Jolley and Sally Morgan.

Western Australia's fashion designers are also an exceptionally talented bunch. Leading local labels include Aurelio Costarella and Ruth Tarvydas.
