Fremantle and Cottesloe Art Scene
Duration: 1 Day
Day 1: Fremantle and Cottesloe
Cosmopolitan Fremantle is alive with art and culture. Here the old port’s historic buildings and lanes have created an enclave for artists and their enterprises. As well as great galleries, Freo is a hub for markets, independent fashion outlets, retro shops and great multicultural cafes and restaurants.
Day 1: Fremantle and Cottesloe Art Scene
Make your way by foot or hop on the orange CAT to the magnificent neo-Gothic Fremantle Arts Centre. Rich in history, the magnificent building located on 6 acres was constructed in the 1850s and originally used as an asylum. Today the Fremantle Arts Gallery runs a cultural program which includes exhibitions of contemporary visual art and craft, creative arts courses and free music concerts on Sunday afternoons. The Craft Shop is stocked full of beautifully hand-crafted ceramics, glassware, wood and textiles by Western Australia's most accomplished craft artists, as well as a discerning selection of new releases, local history and lifestyle titles from Fremantle Press. You will also find the Fremantle Museum here.
From here, you can choose whether to stroll into Fremantle or hail the CAT bus again to travel into town to the historic west-end.

The Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery adjacent to Notre Dame University is an intrinsic facet of the Fremantle community – a gallery offering six individual spaces creating interplay of history with contemporary visual art and craft.
Just around the corner on High St you’ll find one of Australia's leading Aboriginal art galleries, Indigenart, showing works on canvas and bark, prints and artefacts from across the country.
Just three stops from Fremantle Train station is Mosman Park - If you are driving, make your way over the Stirling Bridge and a little further north to Glyde Street, Mosman Park where you will find 3 art galleries – each one different. Galerie Düsseldorf - Western Australia's longest established private art gallery, Johnston Gallery - the recently opened contemporary photography gallery, and Gallows Gallery - an ambient space displaying a range of artistic expressions, which reflect both contemporary and traditional styles from established and emerging artists.
Next on to Cottesloe, where you will find Stafford Studios amidst the Norfolk Island pines on Forrest Street. Stafford Studios is an established art gallery showing well known and respected Australian artists, described as an ever-changing artistic feast.
Next on to Jarrad Street, see the exquisitely designed jewellery in Katherine Kalaf Gallery - the first venue in Western Australia exclusively devoted to the promotion and presentation of contemporary jewellery and objects.
A short stroll will find you at Cottesloe Beach, and time for an afternoon drink. The sunsets at Cottesloe are simply stunning, and a calming end to a busy day.
