Reefs in Western Australia

Coral in Ningaloo Marine ParkWestern Australia's pristine reefs will leave you lost for words.

Over 12,000 kilometres of perfectly preserved coastline is home to colourful corals and countless fascinating sea creatures.

Ningaloo Reef is a 260 kilometre spectacle of colour and diversity.

Emerald lagoons teem with brilliant coral and over 500 species of vibrant tropical fish.

Turtles, mantra rays, whale sharks and humpback whales are just some of the marine life living in this colourful, unspoiled reef system.

It's considered by many as one of the great wonders of the world.

There's world class diving through to family snorkelling for novices in sheltered bays.

Best of all, you can snorkel the reef just metres from the shore - Ningaloo is the largest fringing coral reef in Australia.
Scuba Diving off Rottnest Island
Between March and June, visitors can even swim alongside whale sharks the world's largest fish and a true gentle giant of the sea.

Rottnest Island is just a 30-minute cruise from Fremantle Harbour.

This picture-perfect paradise just about has it all - sheltered turquoise lagoons, spectacular surf and multiple reefs flush with colourful schools of fish.

It's also where you'll find Roe Reef where great caves and ledges abound on the lumpy limestone reef bottom, which is covered in spongy and honeycomb corals.

Oodles of wrasse, harlequin, fox fish and fiddler sharks make this spot a haven for snorkelling and diving.

The Shoalwater Island Marine Park, an hour south of Perth, is a picturesque chain of limestone islands surrounded by cavernous reefs.

Rowley Shoals Marine LifeThe waters are teeming with sea stars, urchins, molluscs, fish and bottlenose dolphins.

Head north to Broome to explore the glorious Rowley Shoal Marine Park.

This is an unspoiled, remote chain of coral atolls on the edge of a wide continental shelf.

Rowley Shoal is home to colourful coral gardens, giant clams and schools of tuna and mackerel.

Giant potato cod and maori wrasse wait to be hand fed and follow divers around, while colourful reef fish show little fear.

There are more than 230 species of coral to see as well as 688 different types of fish including many not found closer to the shore.
