In the 1970s, Digger's Rest was abandoned land. Roderick worked it and made improvements and was granted a lease in 1976. The horse trekking and trail rides known as 'Kimberley Pursuits' began in 1986. They grew out of Roderick's desire to preserve the experience and history of the stockmen, the cattle musters and the pioneering years of the Kimberley region.

In 1996, Alida was travelling through the Kimberley with a friend, in search of outback adventure! As fate would have it, her old car broke down and she was stranded in Kununurra. She found out Digger's Rest offered horse riding activities....and the rest is history! In July last year, Roderick and Alida had their wedding on the property while the sun was setting behind the beautiful Cockburn Range.

The couple have a real attachment to the Kimberley - to the landscape, the way of life and to the people.

"We work hard to keep Digger's Rest going…with cattle, horses, goats, chooks, and tourists there is always something going on," Alida said.

"Roderick and I also realise just how fortunate we are to be able to live this amazing life out in the Kimberley.

“To wake up to the view of the Cockburn Range every morning, to have our horses at our doorstep and to be able to wander down to the river for a fish whenever we like, it’s really special."

Over the years, Roderick and Alida's passion for the Kimberley has seen them build a solid reputation for Digger's Rest that brings back guests again and again. Now they not only horse treks and trail rides, but also accommodation, meals and guided barramundi fishing. Next year, Roderick and Alida plan to offer participation in half and full day cattle musters.

In 2007, they also had "Hollywood" visit Digger's Rest, with cast and crew of Baz Luhrmann's epic Australia spending 21 days at the property. Hugh Jackman even left his mark at Digger's Rest – signing the wall of the homestead for guests to see for years to come.
