Facts about the Kimberley
  • Western Australia's Kimberley region is one of the world's last true wilderness areas.
  • Kununurra is the Kimberley's youngest town, built in the early 1960s to serve the Ord River Irrigation Project. Although the town is young, the landscape is not - some of the oldest rocks in the Kimberley formed approximately 20 million years ago.
  • The word Kununurra means 'big water' in the local Indigenous language and is the gateway to the east Kimberley region.
