Since 1968, Plantagenet has always been family-owned.

In 1975 an apple packing shed in Mount Barker was purchased and converted into the region’s first winery and cellar door. Today the Cellar Door on Albany Highway remains open seven days for tastings and is a point of call for those passing through or exploring the region.

The Great Southern is the largest region in Australia and is the second-largest producer of grapes in Western Australia. It is a landscape of forested cliffs, mountain ranges, grazing pastures and towns such as Mount Barker steeped in farming history.

Chief Winemaker, Mike Garland, has dedicated his career to refining his craft and producing award-winning wine in the Great Southern Wine Region; his devotion to the region is highly revered amongst the wine community.

The climate is cool-temperate and strongly influenced by the proximity of the Southern Ocean. Rainfall is plentiful and even during the hottest Australian summer, daytime temperatures are moderated by cooling evening sea breezes. The warm days and cool nights of the Great Southern allow maximum retention of the varietal flavours and aromas required for complex wines.

The vision is to create wines of provenance and distinction that genuinely reflect the outstanding potential of the Great Southern wine region.
