About the Exhibition
Alejandra López Zaballa's project was inspired by her visit to Casa Hogar Home for Girls in Oaxaca, Mexico, on February 19, 2015. Armed with a camera and a heavy pack, she formed an unexpected connection with the girls, whose vulnerability, energy, and joy amidst adversity created a lasting bond.
The resulting photographic series was created to support the girls and honour López Zaballa's mentor, Mary Ellen Mark, who loved Oaxaca and guided her to Casa Hogar. The work challenges perceptions of Children's Homes as solely tragic spaces, revealing instead an environment rich in love, creativity, and resilience.
Through her images, López Zaballa captures the girls' unique magic and grace, their ability to embrace complex circumstances with remarkable strength, and the spontaneity and authenticity often lost in adulthood. The series aims to raise awareness of overlooked social issues while giving voice to those often unheard. Each photograph reflects the spirit, joy, and generosity of the girls, conveying the profound impact of their presence.
This exhibition is part of the Head On Photo Festival Perth, presented by the Head On Foundation.
