Take a day trip from Perth to the other-worldly landscape of the Pinnacles Desert in Nambung National Park. Following the Indian Ocean Drive, you can stop to meet friendly kangaroos, try sandboarding and taste Cervantes’ famous seafood delicacy.
If you’re travelling between July and October, you’ll see Western Australia in full colour, as the coastal landscapes are filled with the blooms of spring wildflowers.
Best time: August and September (to coincide with the wildflowers)

Lunch at The Lobster Shack, Cervantes
Heading north from Perth via the Mitchell Freeway and Marmion Avenue or Wanneroo Road, the drive to Yanchep takes less than an hour from central Perth.
Take a morning walk on one of nine walk trails in Yanchep National Park to meet the resident kangaroos, koala colony and wildlife of the woodlands and wetlands. Between September and October, the gardens and bushlands are also filled with the colour of spring wildflowers.
If you’re keeping good time, stop for a quick coffee break at the park’s café or restaurant.
Join the Indian Ocean Drive north of Yanchep and head for the rock lobster capital of Cervantes. The journey is approximately one and a half hours, giving you time to dine like a king – feasting on WA’s most valuable delicacy, worth over AU$300 million a year.
Between November and August, The Lobster Shack offers daily boat tours to collect the lobster pots, as well as factory tours and fresh seafood lunches.

The Pinnacles Desert, Nambung National Park
If you’re craving a dip in the Indian Ocean or a coastal panorama photo opportunity, head for Hangover Bay or Thirsty Point.
On your way south to the Pinnacles, take a short detour to encounter some of the oldest living fossils on Earth – the stromatolites and strombalites of Lake Thetis.
You can opt to walk or drive through the Pinnacles Desert in Nambung National Park. Tracks and trails lead you through thousands of limestone spires formed over millions of years, and the nearby Pinnacles Desert Discovery Centre explains its mysteries, history and habitats.
Retrace your journey to Perth via the Indian Ocean Drive, and stop for a mini adventure in Lancelin – sandboarding on Western Australia’s largest sand dunes. Or climb to the summit and watch the colour show as the sun sets into the Indian Ocean.
From here, it’s just over one-and-a-half-hour’s drive, joining Wanneroo Road and the Mitchell Freeway, to bring you back to Perth.
