This project explores the global phenomenon of cosplay, a popular practice among young people where the body isn't about conventional beauty but about being seen, photographed, and shared online.

Through a series of portraits, young cosplayers embody animated characters, utilising this playful transformation to explore new identities and gain a deeper understanding of themselves.

Inspired by John Olson's 1970s photographs, Niccolò travelled to Italy, Kenya, and Japan to capture cosplayers like rock stars alongside their families. These images reveal a striking contrast between social identity, represented by parents, and individual identity expressed through fantasy.

The family portraits also celebrate cultural diversity and highlight how cosplay connects generations of digital natives worldwide, reflecting both personal expression and shared global culture.

This exhibition is part of the Head On Photo Festival Perth, presented by the Head On Foundation.
