PICNICS AND BARBECUES

Western Australia is teeming with postcard-perfect picnic grounds, so pack a gourmet hamper and hit the open road!

Picnicking on the river's edge, a game of frisbee at the park and feasting on a good old Aussie barbecue are popular pastimes in this sunny State.

Head to the beach, bunk down beside the river or find your favourite park or reserve and then spread a rug and savour the relaxed ambience and warm weather.

Experience Perth

The Swan River Foreshore and Kings Park are popular among picnickers.

Choose from secluded bush settings, grassed areas with sweeping views or beside adventure play equipment for the kids.

The South Perth foreshore is the perfect spot to spend a sunny afternoon.

It offers spectacular, uninterrupted views of the city skyline and water sports like tubing and catamarans.

Matilda Bay in Nedlands is another place to picnic, with its shady trees and cool, clean river.

Be sure to head east to the stunning hills, where there are plenty of idyllic spots to enjoy.

Firm favourites include Kalamunda, Mundaring, Toodyay, and Northam where Pelham Reserve offers sensational views of the Avon Valley whilst still in the Experience Perth region.

At Yanchep National Park, 45 minutes north of Perth, discover Aboriginal cultural experiences, limestone caves and native wildlife.

You'll find electric or gas barbecues in many of Perth's parks and reserves and they don't cost a cent.

They're available on a first come, first serve basis, but there are so many you're bound to find one in a good spot.

On the drive down south, be sure to stop for a picnic lunch on Mandurah's grassy foreshore, complete with inquisitive pelicans and plenty of playgrounds for the kids.

Australia's Coral Coast

If you're day-tripping to the Pinnacles, try Hangover Bay for an oceanfront barbecue.

Australia's South West

In the South West, the Blackwood River Valley is peppered with well-marked bush trails, scenic drives, picnic spots, restaurants and galleries.
