Cattle Pool, as the name suggests, is a large waterhole where livestock have historically quenched their thirst. It is a permanent water source in the bed of the usually dry Lyons River. After good rains, the pool fills up and provides a stunning site.
Of particular interest are the river gums that line the banks, and some are quite massive. When breezes are light, the reflections are a photographer's delight. Quiet nature lovers will often observe plenty of wildlife including waterbirds, corellas and schools of large fish milling near the surface. It is not uncommon to see big goannas also known as bungarras. Enjoy this peaceful spot with great views back to Mount Augustus.
