Just 10 minutes from Kununurra, Ivanhoe Crossing is an iconic causeway spanning the mighty Ord River, offering one of the region's most recognisable and photogenic landscapes.
Originally part of the main road to Wyndham, the crossing was partially submerged following the development of the Ord Irrigation Scheme in the 1960s. Today, it remains a unique link across the river, with water flowing over the causeway year-round—creating a striking scene of wide river channels, rocky outcrops and expansive Kimberley skies, particularly at sunrise and sunset.
Ivanhoe Crossing is a favourite spot for locals and visitors alike, especially for barramundi fishing. Anglers cast a line from the riverbanks or head out by boat on the Ord River, which provides ideal barra habitat. This is also saltwater crocodile country, so visitors should always remain alert, keep a safe distance from the water's edge, and avoid standing on the crossing itself.
The crossing connects to Packsaddle Road on the western side, providing access to surrounding rural areas and stations, while the eastern side leads back towards Kununurra. Vehicles can drive across when water levels are low, however conditions can change quickly and the crossing is often impassable during the wet season.
