The trees speak in captivating colour and librettos soar across pristine sands. Giants roam the city streets, stars light up under the Milky Way, and fairytales come to life.

Perth Festival is a cultural cavalcade that has been firing imaginations and lifting spirits for more than 70 years, sharing hundreds of spellbinding stories in myriad artforms over three glorious weeks.

Australia’s longest-running arts festival brings world-class performance, music, film, visual arts and literary voices to Perth (Boorloo). It also raises the voices of one of the world’s oldest living cultures in the most magnificent ways.

Held on Noongar Boodjar (land), where the warmth of the sun (Ngaangk) is felt long after it sets over the spectacular Indian Ocean, this is a festival of and for the people.

Feel the spirit of connection

The language of Boorloo takes majestic flight in an original opera sung entirely in Noongar. A world premiere is just one way the festival elevates art thousands of years in the making. Haunting glass works shed light on a dark past; artists reveal how ancient wisdom can help solve a modern-day crisis; and First Nations writers discuss the power of storytelling. Start your journey of discovery before the festival with an Aboriginal cultural tour along the Swan River (Derbarl Yerrigan), where Noongar guides bring the past to life.

Soak up the sounds

From hip hop in the Supreme Court Gardens, a short stroll from the stunning Swan River (Derbarl Yerrigan), to neo soul in The Rechabite, in the heart of bustling Northbridge, cool sounds ring out around Boorloo and beyond throughout the festival. Join First Nations sensations for the deadliest block party. Listen to opera on Scarborough Beach as waves lap the shore. Lose yourself in classical heaven at Perth Concert Hall. Just don’t forget to feed your belly as well as your soul at one of the many great bars and restaurants nearby each venue.

Make star gazing an artform

Where better to watch stars perform than under the stars? Perth’s sultry summer evenings are made for outdoor entertainment. Sink into a chair between the towering pines at the Somerville, an enchanting natural cinema where birdsong is the backdrop to a riveting roster of international films. Bring a picnic rug to the Supreme Court Gardens and chill out to a glittering line-up of local and international stars. Enjoy a late-afternoon dip at one of Perth’s 19 stunning beaches before settling in for an operatic adventure by the ocean.  Just don’t forget to look up now and then at the show nature is putting on above.

See art in surreal spaces

Artists have that magical ability to transform the ordinary into something extraordinary, whether reinventing disused spaces or finding innovative ways to tell their stories. An old shopping precinct is given new life as an indoor wetland, plants that once hugged the Swan River shrouding escalators. An atrium window becomes a giant kaleidoscope, flooding the space with coloured shafts of light. A public swimming pool is turned into a theatre where everyone gets to splash about. A theatre morphs into a giant dining table where all the senses come alive. The surreal becomes real.

Find the free and fabulous

From morning meditations to guided astrological dances, street poetry to lively conversations about anything and everything, the festival program is always packed with things to see and do that don’t cost a cent. You can wander art exhibitions from Perth (Boorloo) to Fremantle (Walyalup), don op shop bargains for a prom party with a difference, and groove to world-class musicians under the stars.  All for free.

Imagine a waterway transformed into a realm of fire, light and dreamlike wonder – that's the magic they're bringing to Hillarys Boat Harbour with Acqua Forte Parade. This isn't your typical parade that simply passes by. They're staging a spectacular sensory immersion, where 12 mesmerising moving figures glide across the water like mirages born from the elements themselves. Picture this: mysterious riders atop strange camel-horses, a magnificent dragon and its fearless tamer, fire-bearing scouts lighting the way, ethereal Muses of fire and water, a dreamer floating in her giant bed, otherworldly elven creatures, and a king accompanied by his devoted fool – plus a floating car with two intrepid passengers, along with 2 exclusively designed props created especially for Joondalup Festival. From both ends of the 200-metre route, fantastical beings emerge, lighting 20 floating fire pots anchored along the harbour's edge. As darkness falls, watch the water come alive with these larger-than-life characters straight out of legendary tales, interacting with each other and the elements in this kingdom of water, fire and music carried on the evening breeze. For four magical nights, Hillarys Boat Harbour becomes a stage for dreams, a canvas for imagination, and a reminder that wonder still exists in the world – you just need to know where to look.

Unlock wonder at Joondalup Festival, Perth north's award-winning celebration of art and culture. Running across unexpected locations throughout the City of Joondalup, this three-week cultural extravaganza transforms parks, lakes and coastline into wonderlands of imagination and spectacle. The program features five spectacular free events. Crystal People sees 52 solar-powered luminescent figures rising mysteriously from the lakes at Sir James McCusker Park in Illuka, shimmering by day and glowing translucently at dusk. The Australian debut of Acqua Forte Parade brings French company Ilotopie's whimsical floating water theatre to Hillarys Boat Harbour, with illuminated characters gliding across a 400-metre route accompanied by soundscape and pyrotechnics over four magical nights. The Whale by Spare Parts Puppet Theatre invites visitors to help bring an enormous interactive marionette to life at Tom Simpson Park in Mullaloo. Noongar artist Phil Walleystack's Kaya is a thrilling fusion of music, storytelling and dance staged under the stars. Christine de Grancy's 'A Day with David' is a WA-exclusive photographic exhibition capturing David Bowie's intimate 1994 visit to Viennese outsider artists. What happens when one of the world's most iconic artists steps away from the spotlight to spend a quiet day with outsider artists in a psychiatric clinic? Photographer Christine de Grancy was there to capture it – and now, for the first time in Western Australia, we're bringing these extraordinary images to Joondalup. On 8 September 1994, David Bowie – accompanied by Brian Eno, André Heller and photographer Christine de Grancy – entered the grounds of the Gugging Psychiatric Clinic near Vienna. This wasn't a casual photo opportunity. Bowie's own family history included his half-brother Terry Burns, whose schizophrenia and tragic suicide haunted Bowie's life and work. At Gugging, he encountered something profound: a community of Art Brut creators, patients who had become internationally recognised artists, including Oswald Tschirtner, Johann Hauser, Johann Garber and August Walla. Presented in collaboration with Santa Monica Art Museum, this major exhibition transforms the Joondalup Contemporary Art Gallery into a space of reflection on creativity, mental health, authenticity and the power of art to bridge worlds. Whether you're a lifelong Bowie devotee or simply curious about the man behind the legend, this exhibition offers an unprecedented window into a transformative moment in music history.

Silent sentinels in the park There's something hauntingly beautiful happening on the lakes at Sir James McCusker Park – 52 crystalline human figures rising from the water, swaying with every breath of wind, changing with every shift of light. Crystal People is a meditation on community, transformation and our connection to the elements, brought to life by French theatrical company Ilotopie. These larger-than-life luminescent sculptures aren't static installations – they're living, breathing presences that respond to their environment. On the northern lake, 6 dancing couples sway together in silent choreography, whilst scattered individuals rise stubbornly against the wind across the southern lake. Near the bank, solitary silhouettes wait, watching. Throughout the day, these figures play with seasonal light and shadow, their forms shifting and multiplying in the water's reflection. They charge themselves with solar energy, becoming gloriously luminescent as twilight falls, creating an entirely different experience after dark. Crystal People invites you to witness the grace of air, water and light giving life to these human imprints. Perfect for contemplative moments, family outings, or romantic evening strolls – Crystal People transforms your local park into a space of wonder and meaning.
