Off the Pilbara coast, the Montebello Islands are home to one of the world's most diverse marine environments, with more than 250 low-lying islands and islets surrounded by turquoise waters, sheltered lagoons and vibrant coral reefs.

Covering more than 58,000 hectares, the Montebello Islands Marine Park is a paradise for snorkellers, divers and anglers. Explore coral gardens teeming with tropical fish, discover secluded beaches and keep an eye out for dolphins, dugongs, turtles and migrating whales. The islands are also an important habitat for seabirds and migratory shorebirds.

Accessible only by boat, the Montebello Islands can be explored on expedition cruises, guided tours and dedicated fishing, diving and snorkelling charters departing from Pilbara coastal towns including Dampier and Onslow, and from Exmouth.

Fishing is permitted in designated zones, while camping is allowed on selected islands for a maximum of five nights, subject to seasonal restrictions.

The islands also have a fascinating, if unusual, history, having been the site of British atomic tests in 1952 and 1956. Visitors to Trimouille and Alpha Islands should limit their time ashore to one hour per day due to residual radiation.
