Western Australia is a botanical enthusiasts dream.

Australia’s largest State is home to one of the largest collections of wildflowers on earth – there’s more than 12,000 species, 60 per cent of which can’t be found anywhere else on Earth.

The season begins in June in the north of WA and sweeps south, finishing on the south coast in November, and one of the best ways to see some of the State’s most admired and unique species is by taking a guided tour.

From the months of July and August, you will be treated to spectacular displays of everlastings in WA’s Mid West. Midwest Adventure Tours operate full day tours to see these colourful carpets, as well as the world famous wreath flowers, lilies and orchids. Closer to the coast, Kalbarri Adventure Tours operates wildflower walking tours to Kalbarri National Park across the months of winter and spring. Over a five month period, the national park erupts in a riot of colour, when its 800 native species bloom.

In the State’s capital of Perth, a mix of operators provide half-day, full-day and multi-day tours, giving you prime opportunity to capture some of the region’s most beautiful species, including kangaroo paw, hakea, grevillea, wattle, orchids and peas. Busaround Tours and Perth Luxury Tours offer personalised experiences, including private group bookings, between the months of August and October. Alternatively, you can join likeminded passengers on a full day coach tour with Adams Pinnacle Tours, where your itinerary is decided on the day to ensure areas with the most abundant blooms are visited.

In the heart of Perth city, a new tour explores the beautiful surrounds of Kings Park, including its native wildflowers, on a guided bike tour. GoGo Active Tours offers twice daily departures, three times a week across the month of September. For those wanting to combine wildflower viewing with a cultural experience, a range of Aboriginal-guided tours, including Go Cultural Aboriginal Tours and Experiences, highlight Karrgatup’s (Kings Park) native flora, with a Dreamtime story, traditional song and Nyoongar language.

Moving south into the expansive Golden Outback region, an abundance of natural vegetation is just waiting to be uncovered, from outback plains to coastal heaths. Edgewalkers and Inspiration Outdoors will take you on a multi-day walking tour with specialised guides through one of the State’s most interesting natural attractions, Fitzgerald River National Park – home to more than 1,800 beautiful and bizarre species of flowering plants and listed as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. Here, you’ll be in awe of the surrounding blooms, including royal hakea, qualup bell, sepulcralis, weeping gum and woolly banksia.

Combining highlights of WA’s South West, Great Southern Outback Tours offers a wilderness full-day tour, taking in a mix of wildflowers, aquaculture, native fauna and Aboriginal culture. One of only 36 biodiversity hotspots in the world, and the only one in Australia, the State’s South West sees more than 2,500 species of wildflower bloom between the months of August and November, including 150 species of orchid – many of which are rare and endangered.

One of its most visited areas, the Margaret River region, will have you enjoying more than just the premium wine it’s renowned for. A selection of guided tours explore the themes of local ecology, geology, history and culture, including Cape to Cape Explorer Tours and Koomal Dreaming. For those wanting to add a taste of luxury to their wilderness adventure, sign-up to a tour with Walk into Luxury and Margaret River Discovery Tours, who combine extraordinary landscapes with a side of indulgence.
