The trees speak in captivating colour and librettos soar across pristine sands. Giants roam the city streets, stars light up under the Milky Way, and fairytales come to life.

Perth Festival is a cultural cavalcade that has been firing imaginations and lifting spirits for more than 70 years, sharing hundreds of spellbinding stories in myriad artforms over three glorious weeks.

Australia’s longest-running arts festival brings world-class performance, music, film, visual arts and literary voices to Perth (Boorloo). It also raises the voices of one of the world’s oldest living cultures in the most magnificent ways.

Held on Noongar Boodjar (land), where the warmth of the sun (Ngaangk) is felt long after it sets over the spectacular Indian Ocean, this is a festival of and for the people.

They leave us richer for the experience and with a piece of Perth in their hearts. Subscribe to Perth Festival to get the jump on big-ticket shows each year.

Feel the spirit of connection

The language of Boorloo takes majestic flight in an original opera sung entirely in Noongar. A world premiere is just one way the festival elevates art thousands of years in the making. Haunting glass works shed light on a dark past; artists reveal how ancient wisdom can help solve a modern-day crisis; and First Nations writers discuss the power of storytelling. Start your journey of discovery before the festival with an Aboriginal cultural tour along the Swan River (Derbarl Yerrigan), where Noongar guides bring the past to life.

Soak up the sounds

From hip hop in the Supreme Court Gardens, a short stroll from the stunning Swan River (Derbarl Yerrigan), to neo soul in The Rechabite, in the heart of bustling Northbridge, cool sounds ring out around Boorloo and beyond throughout the festival. Join First Nations sensations for the deadliest block party. Listen to opera on Scarborough Beach as waves lap the shore. Lose yourself in classical heaven at Perth Concert Hall. Just don’t forget to feed your belly as well as your soul at one of the many great bars and restaurants nearby each venue.

Make star gazing an artform

Where better to watch stars perform than under the stars? Perth’s sultry summer evenings are made for outdoor entertainment. Sink into a chair between the towering pines at the Somerville, an enchanting natural cinema where birdsong is the backdrop to a riveting roster of international films. Bring a picnic rug to the Supreme Court Gardens and chill out to a glittering line-up of local and international stars. Enjoy a late-afternoon dip at one of Perth’s 19 stunning beaches before settling in for an operatic adventure by the ocean.  Just don’t forget to look up now and then at the show nature is putting on above.

See art in surreal spaces

Artists have that magical ability to transform the ordinary into something extraordinary, whether reinventing disused spaces or finding innovative ways to tell their stories. An old shopping precinct is given new life as an indoor wetland, plants that once hugged the Swan River shrouding escalators. An atrium window becomes a giant kaleidoscope, flooding the space with coloured shafts of light. A public swimming pool is turned into a theatre where everyone gets to splash about. A theatre morphs into a giant dining table where all the senses come alive. The surreal becomes real.

Find the free and fabulous

From morning meditations to guided astrological dances, street poetry to lively conversations about anything and everything, the festival program is always packed with things to see and do that don’t cost a cent. You can wander art exhibitions from Perth (Boorloo) to Fremantle (Walyalup), don op shop bargains for a prom party with a difference, and groove to world-class musicians under the stars.  All for free.

No night is long enough for us to dream twice (a title drawn from a line by the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish) brings together contemporary photography and video by nine artists – Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme, Mohamad Abdouni, Hicham Benohoud, Myriam Boulos, Mohamed Bourouissa, Sabiha Çimen, Hannah Darabi and Abdulhamid Kircher – from South West Asia, North Africa and their diasporas. What connects these artists is not geography alone but a shared engagement with conditions of pressure, rupture and transformation. Their works emerge from sites where social, political and emotional forces accumulate, break apart and reform. In doing so, they mirror the contemporary condition of photography itself: a medium operating at the limits of representation and reality. Rather than simply documenting what has been, these images push against the boundaries of the world they depict. Through aesthetic strategies of intensification, the artists create images that are hypervisceral, hypersaturated and affectively overwhelming. Photography becomes less a record than a force, capable of unsettling perception and opening new ways of seeing. The show reflects on the unstable relationship between images and reality in the present moment. If dreaming is understood as a collective and political act of imagining otherwise, the title suggests that the work of the image in shaping reality remains unfinished.

All the secrets are buried between the oceans and the mountains, is the first solo exhibition by acclaimed Western Australian artist Stormie Mills to be held at an Australian state gallery. A defining figure in Australian street art, Mills has spent four decades shaping the visual language of contemporary urban culture. This landmark exhibition presents a new body of work reflecting his global movements, personal history, and the encounters that have informed his distinctive practice since he first began painting in 1984. Through his sustained practice, Mills has played a pivotal role in advancing street art as a recognised contemporary art form, helping shift public perception from underground graffiti to a respected and influential movement. His works, rendered in a restrained palette of black, white, grey and silver, explore themes of isolation, tenderness, resilience and the human condition. Their quiet vulnerability and hope have resonated with audiences across cultures and continents. All the secrets are buried between the oceans and the mountains brings together a significant body of new and recent works that reflect Mills' desire to connect intimately with others through painting, through storytelling, and through shared emotional experience.

An immersive exhibition centred around newly recorded video oral histories of Menang Elders and a large-scale visual meditation on the Kinjarling/Albany landscape. This exhibition marks 200 years since colonisation began on Menang Country and asks visitors to encounter Kinjarling not as a backdrop to history, but as a living landscape with its own voice and memory. The stories within this exhibition have been recorded to add important new layers of meaning to the largely colonial maps, photographs and illustrations in the State Library's collection. Visitors will step into a quiet 6-metre-wide dome inspired by a kornt (a traditional shelter) to hear the Elders' stories. These include reflections by Carol Pettersen, Lester Coyne, Mark Colbung, Vernice Gillies, Doreen Hancox, Sharrlyn Maddren and a young Menang ranger, Cleve Humphries. This immersive experience also features a specially commissioned animation that reinterprets the State Library's collections through a Menang lens, weaving Menang artist and academic Shandell Cumming's artworks with centuries-old maps, photographs and illustrations to reveal new ways of seeing and understanding these materials. The exhibition gives new voices and stories to evocative landscape photographs taken by government and commercial photographers over many decades. This exhibition is curated by Denien Toomath, a Menang Noongar woman and Senior Partnerships Officer at the State Library. Produced by the State Library of Western Australia in partnership with the Community Arts Network.

The first solo exhibition in a state art gallery by internationally acclaimed, Western Australian-born artist, Tim Burns. A protean figure, Tim Burns is one of Australia's pre-eminent conceptual artists. His oeuvre has long been fugitive; variously and at times intentionally, by the artist himself, dissembled, obfuscated and ventriloquized. Spanning his six-decade career, this exhibition showcases Burns's unique contributions to the fields of performance, video and conceptual art, his formative role in experimental filmmaking and his talents as a painter. The Kinetic Moments includes paintings, works on paper, artist's books, films, video works, ephemera and archival material, with more than 35 works by the artist and collaborators from major Australian public and private collections on display. From original performance documentation unseen since the 1970s, to paintings completed as recently as 2025, the exhibition charts Burns's development from a radical artist into an artistic force majeure. At the exhibition's core is Burns's first work in the State Art Collection, Resumé 73-77. A single-edition deconstructed artist's book that documents one of Burns's most radical and productive artmaking periods and journeys across cities, countries and art movements. Set between his earliest surviving paintings from 1969 and his later forays into super-8 filmmaking, this work, and by extension the exhibition, reveals Burns's continual positioning of himself as an artist at the intersection of radical politics, academic enquiry and conceptual provocations.

On 21 June 1985, the first printed edition of X-Press Magazine hit Perth's streets. From humble beginnings as a small but plucky guide to Perth's nightlife, the magazine became a highly influential bible for all things music, art, fashion, food and drink in Perth. With the title now owned by local media company Vanguard Media Group, it also looks to the brand's digital future. Join them to launch their newest exhibition, X-Press Magazine: 41 Years on the Streets. They'll be celebrating with an electrifying panel conversation with journalists, musicians and those closest to the magazine, who'll reminisce on war stories from the trenches of rock 'n' roll and print journalism and reflect on the changing tides of fashion, media and pop culture in Perth. The evening will also include musical interludes from Abbe May.
